The family takes turns sleeping together to keep the old dog company
The things people do for their dogs are heartwarming!
Spike had always slept in the bed with his owners, but due to his age he no longer had access to the upstairs bedroom. So instead, his family comes to sleep with him.
Our dogs start to slow down a bit as they get older, but we do our best to make sure they are happy and comfortable in their twilight years.
But one family did their best for their old dog, rearranging their sleeping schedules just to make sure he felt loved.
Spike is a 14-year-old English bulldog. Like many dogs his age, he can’t walk around like he used to. He recently had a second stroke, which made it difficult for him to get up and down stairs.
Unfortunately, this meant that Spike couldn’t do one of his favorite activities: sleeping in bed with his family, something he’d been doing since he was a puppy.
“The first night we had him, we closed the staircase gate and went to bed,” Spike’s owner, Katherine Morris, told The Dodo. “He sobbed for a few minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and running into my parents’ room and climbing straight into bed! And that’s where he’s slept ever since.
Their bedroom was on the second floor, so Spike no longer had access to his favorite spot. He kept trying despite this in his weakened state, so much so that his family had to close the stairs to prevent him from trying.
But instead, they came up with a brilliant solution: if Spike couldn’t come up and sleep with them, they’d come downstairs and sleep with Spike!
Now, in turns, the family members set up the folding couch and spend the night downstairs with Spike, all to make sure the old dog still has company.
Katherine returns from university to find her parents’ new sleeping arrangements, but that doesn’t surprise her – they’ve always had a close relationship with Spike.
“They are absolutely inseparable,” Catherine told The Dodo. “My dad calls him ‘Old Bean’ and they’re always talking away.”
“My dad will also bring Spike water and food to the couch and hand-feed him to make sure he gets his medication and keeps up his strength.”
Spike may not be the little pup he once was, but it’s clear that one thing has never changed: his family’s love for him.
Through this selfless act, they make it clear that they will do whatever it takes to make Spike’s final years as wonderful as possible.
Catherine said: “We love our big boy very much, and we are very happy to have him in our lives.” “We hope we made up for his not-so-good start in life by giving him all the love in the world.”
It’s amazing how much people go to great lengths to make their dogs happy. Thank you to this family for taking care of their old dog.
