In 2021 I did a “Great Escape” pilgrimage with my bike cycling from location to location on the German/ Austrian border. Incredibly the famous barn from Steve McQueen’s motorcycle chase is still there albeit in a bit of a state of disrepair. North of Pfronten, Bavaria.

The ruins of Connor MacLeod’s castle (Christopher Lambert), where he lived with Heather (Beatie Edney) after being exiled from his native village. The castle was destroyed during the fight between The Kurgan (Clancy Brown) and Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) – all in Russell Mulcahy’s “Highlander” (1986). In search of these locations, I visited with my family the area around The Meeting of Three Waters in the Scottish Highlands, near Glencoe in 2018. Unfortunately, the castle was built as a set piece solely for the purposes of that movie.

Elliott’s house from E.T. This one was harder to get to, GPS took us 2 different ways. And it’s high enough in the mountains my ears we’re popping. I would’ve loved to see the back yard. Movie: E.T. 7121 Lonzo St Tujunga, CA

James Garner and Lindsay Wagner eat at the iconic Tail O’ The Pup in the TV movie pilot episode of “The Rockford Files” back in 1974 – and how that historic hot dog joint looks now 50 years later. This is the same big dog, but it’s not in the original spot – at the top it was at 311 North La Cienega Boulevard, and now it’s about a mile straight up La Cienega just around the corner at 8512 Santa Monica Boulevard. Tail O’ The Pup has been serving Los Angeles since 1946, but in 2005 it closed and was hidden away in a warehouse until it was finally restored and reopened in this new location in 2022. It’s now a part of the West Hollywood building formerly known as “The Doors’ Workshop,” where The Doors recorded their album “L.A. Woman” in 1970 – and what’s now the Tail O’ The Pup’s bathroom is where Jim Morrison sang the vocals for the record. The Tail O’ The Pup has appeared in dozens of TV shows, movies, music videos, etc. over the decades. Such a cool place – and great hot dogs too!
