In 1903, Mark Twain posed for a photograph with his friend, John T. Lewis, in Elmira, New York. They met in 1877 when Lewis saved Twain’s sister-in-law and her daughter. Lewis, an Elder in the Church of the Brethren, shared many discussions with Twain and inspired the character of Jim in Huckleberry Finn. Twain, who appreciated African American culture, was comfortable in the company of African Americans. He challenged racial ideologies in his works, notably in Huckleberry Finn and Pudd’nhead Wilson. Both Twain and Lewis are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira.

In 1990, Freddie Mercury was so ill while recording “The Show Must Go On” that Brian May worried about his ability to sing. Brian recalls: “The melody called for demanding top notes, and I’d only demoed them in falsetto. I said to Freddie, ‘I don’t want you to strain yourself.’ Freddie replied, ‘Don’t worry – I’ll fucking nail it, darling!’ And he did, delivering one of the most extraordinary performances of his life.” Freddie never performed it live, but the song remains a testament to his strength and spirit. Freddie, you are an enduring inspiration. We will always love and adore you.

Hi friends, I met Lisa Wells, a 27-year-old from Wisconsin, in 1989, and we’ve been partners ever since. Lisa played a vital role in the 1990s rebirth of REO Speedwagon, supporting me both emotionally and professionally, and has been by my side during our 35-year “comeback.” Without Lisa, who knows where I or the band would be (more details in my book!). Today is our 32nd wedding anniversary. Our love for REO, its fans, and each other grows deeper every moment. Lisa and I thank you for your continued support and for being part of our incredible journey.
