Breaking Away (1979) Filmed in and around Bloomington, Indiana and on the campus of Indiana University, Breaking Away is a coming of age movie about post-high school friends that grew up as ‘townies’ (aka ‘Cutters’) in a college town, not quite fitting in with the University student population. This movie kicked off major movie careers for Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earl-Haley, and others. Breaking Away won the 1979 Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay and the 1979 Golden Globe® for Best Film. The road seen here in the movie still (Kirkwood Ave) was removed in the late 1980s and replaced with a pedestrian path and flower beds. The ivy has all been removed from the limestone buildings. As an Indiana University graduate myself, this film is near and dear to my heart as I spent four years walking through all of the movie scenes while living in Bloomington.♥
