Doune Castle was used for many scenes in the UK show Outlander (2014). I visited in 2023 and they had a special audio tour narrated by Outlander actors. The production digitally made it look like overgrown ruins for the “present” scenes, and built an entire village in from for the “past” scenes. Address: Castle Hill, Doune,FK16 6EA, Scotland

The ruins of Connor MacLeod’s castle (Christopher Lambert), where he lived with Heather (Beatie Edney) after being exiled from his native village. The castle was destroyed during the fight between The Kurgan (Clancy Brown) and Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) – all in Russell Mulcahy’s “Highlander” (1986). In search of these locations, I visited with my family the area around The Meeting of Three Waters in the Scottish Highlands, near Glencoe in 2018. Unfortunately, the castle was built as a set piece solely for the purposes of that movie.

John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) filmed at John Ford Point inside Monument Valley. I just HAD to recreate this when I visited earlier in 2024.

I conceive my travels by planning very unique “emotional” tours, which mean so much to me. In the sometimes feverish search for places and moments that I have awaited and dreamed of for years. For a cinephile film traveler like me, it doesn’t matter how complex or uncomfortable it may be to reach a certain destination, the important thing is to REACH IT! The final emotion, needless to say, is priceless.
