Elena Propper de Callejón Bonham Carter, mother of actress Helena Bonham Carter, has spent most of her life in North London, married to Raymond Bonham Carter and working as a psychotherapist. Her father, Eduardo Propper de Callejón, was a Spanish diplomat who saved 30,000 Jewish lives during WWII. Helena, born in Islington, received no formal drama training. After failing to get into King’s College Cambridge, she entered the actors’ directory Spotlight with photos taken by her father, landing a TV commercial role at 16 in 1982. She rose to fame with “Room With a View” in 1985.
