On May 17th 2021, I visited the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad doing book research. This is also the location of where they filmed the train and bus crash for the 1993 movie, “The Fugitive.” Years ago when I learned they actually did a full scale crash for the movie I always wanted to visit the site. The site is on private property and hard to see from the road above but with permission to be on the property for the day and blessing I got to see it first hand. It was pretty amazing. Don’t try and go without permission as you will be prosecuted and the area has a high tendency for snakes as well. You can see the area briefly if you ride the train though. Sylva, North Carolina.

Stand By Me – the Water tower…..or, what’s left of it! I was obsessed with this movie growing up. And even though it was a quick scene, I always loved the shot of the boys walking the tracks by the water tower. Took this pic a couple years ago, so I’m not even sure if it’s still there. And the tracks are long gone. But I was so excited to find the spot! McCloud, CA – just off of hwy 89. Turn North on 15 (near Bartle creek) and go about a 1/4 mile. The road goes over what was obviously once railroad tracks. Then walk that for another 1/4 mile and it’s on the left :)
