This is Gilliganâs Island. The famous opening shot in seasons 2 and 3 is of Coconut Island, or Moku o LoÊ»e located in KÄneÊ»ohe Bay off the island of OÊ»ahu in the state of HawaiÊ»i. The show filmed its pilot and some of the first episode not here but over on Kauai and then moved back to Los Angeles. The island is state owned and used by the HawaiÊ»i Institute of Marine Biology. Back in the late 90âs (yes my picture is old) I got to tour the island and this is the picture I took before boarding the ferry. At the time you couldnât get on to the island unless you were apart of a school trip or you were a researcher. Not just anyone could go there you had to have permission. The place is really cool. Our guides told as a tall tale that the show went back to LA because actors were getting into too much âshenanigansâ on the island. While that may be true they most likely decided to shot back in LA and on a sound stage, instead of on location, due to the budget. But, hey itâs fun to think that some âshenanigansâ went on while they were filming in Hawaiâi. âŽïžâïžđïž
